Ned's Disney Pages
Magic Kingdom Maps
The following images of maps are either from my own personal colelction, or have been taken from what I've found around the web. Disclaimer: This page still under contruction.

Between 1971 and I think 1987, you used to be able to purchase big, poster sized maps of the Magic Kingdom. I used to have one of these on my wall as a kid. A momento from a trip back in the early 70's. Back in 2005 I thought that one of those "old" maps would be cool framed, and found one on Ebay. Since then I've been adding to my collection, and I present them here, for others to enjoy. From what I can tell, there have only been 4 versions of these poster maps produced: 1971, 1975, 1979 and 1987. I've not seen them offered in any of the Disney stores since (although I of course look everytime we're down there!). This "obsession" with the maps has now spread into collecting the Magic Kingdom Guidebooks as well, which can be found here.

If you find anything presented here to be inaccurate, or have tidbits of history to share, please drop me a line, as I'd love to here from you!

1971 - 1975 - 1979 - 1987

1971-1974

This is the first one that was offered. I love the bright colors and the simplicity of it all. The artwork style mimics that of the artwork found in the Contempory Resort. You can find them on Ebay anywhere from $20 to $100, depending on the craziness of the bidding.

1975-1978

I've seen these listed and dated between 1975 and 1978. On the copy I own, someone had written "March '78" (but for that it's in otherwise excellent condition!) The map measures 31.5" x 39.5" (huge!). Note the coloring change between '71 and '78. Gone are the brilliant yellows and greens. In their place are more pastel type colors - but still very nice!

While the maps are not dated in anyway (not until '79 did they start adding copyright dates to them), this version does include the Carousel of Progress, which opened in '75. It also lists "Flight to the Moon" which was replaced by "Mission to Mars" in '75 as well. We also see Space Mountain, which opened in '75

I can only guess that one version was printed. Probably designed in '74 and released in '75 in conjunction with the changes to Tomorrowland. I doubt any changes were made to the maps to reflect ride openings or closings.

Ok, so the coloring to the edges is gone, replaced with a yellow and orange rectangle "70's" style border. Nice touch.

1979-1986
More changes. Now we start seeing copyright dates appear. Rides open, rides close(more on this later when time permits!) The funky orange and yellow border is replaced by a softer white non-border and we see the appearance of the characters around the edge. The crowd around the "Magic Kingdom" logo is replaced by a lonesome Minnie waving her baton (Riding crop?) and dressed as a Magic Kingdom hostess.

1987-??
The copy I have from '87 is in very poor condition. Luckily I only paid a few dollars as it was in much worse condition than described. Served as a lesson though that 1) you get what you pay for and 2) Always, Always Always ask questions on Ebay if you're not sure about something. I've found that 99% of the sellers, if they're worth dealing with, will be honest and fair. If they don't answer back, don't bid. There'll be another one coming down the line sooner or later (always is!). Anyway, my version isn't the best but I'm working on getting photos of it up here soon.
